When Al Franken and Janeane Garafolo were making noise about starting the first nationwide liberal talk radio station, Air America, I thought for sure it would be, at the very least, an interesting media experiment/experience.
I found out — ironically, during an impromptu Glenn Mitchell “open lines” call-in program last week — that Dallas has its very own Air America feed at 910 AM, call letters KXEB.
I’ve been tuning in now and then during my daily commutes, and I’ve been MOST entertained by their talk show hosts. Jerry Springer’s on during a lot of my morning commute (tagline: “Possibly the first job I’ve had that my mother would approve of”), and a native New Yorker, Randi Rhoades, is on during my afternoon commute — she’s vicious, possibly slightly crazy, but extremely on point.
I don’t want to turn into one of those people who only seeks out news and opinions that reinforce my own, so I think I’m gonna have to get into the habit of tempering any time spent listening to Air America with some more conservative talk radio as well. If I ever break down and get XM, bet I’ll find something there to suffice — if nothing else, some Fox News broadcast over the radio. 😉
Still, right now I’m in “listen out of curiosity” mode … and I do recommend checking it out. The feed’s not great (what AM feed IS, though?), but it’s fun to listen.
