Our TiVo was working overtime last night, so I didn’t get to see but the first 30 minutes of the Cowboys-Redskins game, and that was fairly uneventful — though, the Cowboys did miss a pretty easy field goal attempt during those first 30 lapsed minutes (obviously *NOT* 30 game minutes). But then, the TiVo wanted to change the channel to record something or another, and I let it, so I went back into football blackout. Which was fine, ’cause I did some homework instead. Around halftime, Daniel got home — he who takes an active disinterest in the sport — so while I did check the score (3-0 Dallas), I didn’t watch the rest of the game. Which was fine, ’cause I did some homework instead.
Fast forward to this morning, and almost immediately upon waking up I hear on the radio that the Redskins staged a comeback in the last four minutes of the game and ended up winning 14-13 with two fantastic pass conversions, including one that flew in the air about 70 yards. WWAAAAAAAHHH?
Given that I developed a taste for football while living in Washington, D.C., I’ve long held special affection for the ‘Skins, and given that I grew up with a father who rooted for whoever was playing Dallas that week, I’ve always taken particular joy in seeing the Cowboys lose.
And, given that my favorite football team in the world (the Mighty Bombers of Mountain Home) managed to break a 19-year losing streak against our archrival last fall, and then beat them AGAIN this year on the road, perhaps I should have known that winning streaks were coming to an end … such as Dallas’s 7- or 9-year winning streak over Washington. For that reason, I should have watched anyway.
DAMMIT!
Also, my Mighty Bombers managed to eek out another victory last Friday — another on-the-road victory, I might add — against Van Buren, a place my father once described as the “armpit of Arkansas.” Final score there: 9-6.
GO BOMBERS GO!
I just hope that they give the Class of ’95 a victory at homecoming this Friday, ’cause my former classmates are having our 10-year reunion this weekend. It would really suck if the team could beat Harrison and Van Buren both on the road and then lose homecoming to Jacksonville.
Here’s my favorite Coach Patrick quote of the week:
“I would like to think it will set us up well conference-wise,” he said. “We’ve got a good Jacksonville team coming in next week and we’ve got to go back and get ourselves prepared to win that game. Hopefully, we’ve taken that next step in our program and realized Harrison is not the only game we want to win.”
(emphasis added)
Frankly, if we did only win against Harrison, I’d still call it a successful season. 😉
Yeah… Okay.. wait till next year… I'll be all over your quarterback… Bombers suck! Starter..
