From Vancouver 2009 |
A few tidbits about my day today. I went to a couple of conference panels this morning, one of which was fascinating, and then headed out for Greek for lunch with friends from UT-Dallas. We found another amazing restaurant (so far, Vancouver is 3/3 on excellent meals!) and ate WAY TOO MUCH food. But it was amazing.
Afterwards, my friend Mike and I headed towards False Creek, a little body of water that separates the main downtown area of Vancouver from some other neighborhoods to the south. We went to Granville Island, a really hip little shopping area that had the most amazing food market — it was somewhere between Seattle’s fish market and a farmer’s market. I saw utterly spectacular fruits, veggies, meats, cheeses, and flowers there, and bought some of the largest and most fresh-looking starfruit I’ve ever seen. Three big ol’ pieces of starfruit for $5 canadian (~ $4 USD).
We then hopped aboard one of the ferry shuttles that run up and down False Creek. I got off near the Vancouver Police Headquarters to set off in search of a little shop I’d found online that I wanted to investigate (results: awesomely good finds! yay shopping!), and Mike headed to the casino, where he reports the dealer almost always hit 21, and his supply of Canadian dollars didn’t last long. Bummer.
I wore myself out walking today. If I had to guess, I’d say I walked roughly 4-5 miles total, and my feet are definitely letting me know they’re somewhat less than thrilled. But, it was a great day, and I’m going to finish it off by going to have a quiet dinner alone (my first solo meal since I got here) and taking in a movie. I haven’t fully decided, but will probably see a French movie called “The Class” that I heard about on NPR a few weeks ago. After all, where else will I get to see it? Of course, I may opt for mindless comedy and instead go for “I Love You, Man,” which I’ve wanted to see since I first read the premise of the movie online a couple of weeks ago.
