I heard on the radio (love me that NPR) yesterday about Terry Schiavo’s autopsy report. Two things stick out to me about this story:
- The coroner presented a conclusive opinion that she was completely brain dead AND blind.
- Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who was so eager to render (as a doctor) his professional opinion that a videotape of Schiavo didn’t seem to indicate she was in a persistent vegetative state, sent out a lackey to read a statement once the autoposy report was made public.
I also find curious House Majority Leader Tom DeLay’s statement (also through a lackey):
Mrs. Schiavo’s death is a moral poverty and a legal tragedy. This loss happened because our legal system did not protect the people who need protection most, and that will change. The time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior, but not today. Today we grieve, we pray, and we hope to God this fate never befalls another.
