WHAT?!

Please, someone, tell me: Am I living in a parallel universe?

I ask because, in the last two weeks, I’ve learned that my fellow students at school believe if a woman accepts a drink from a man, she’s implicitly saying yes to sex later; that they also feel free speech “gets taken too far”; that apparently it’s a big deal if a university provides the morning-after pill to students who’ve been raped (seems that caused a stir at SMU recently?); and now (see below), apparently that gay men are ineligible to be sperm donors.

Maybe I’m unusually aware of this stuff, it’s true … but it REALLY feels to me like we’re regressing back to the 1950s. HELP!!!

Thankfully, our President believes that people should be able to express their fatih (or lack thereof) as they wish — that America is strong precisely because it protects out right not to ascribe to one set of religious doctrines. Bush said the other night: “The great thing about America, David, is that you should be allowed to worship any way you want, and if you choose not to worship, you’re equally as patriotic as somebody who does worship. And if you choose to worship, you’re equally American if you’re a Christian, a Jew, a Muslim. That’s the wonderful thing about our country, and that’s the way it should be.”

So the president will SURELY knock down this FDA bullshit, right?? RIGHT?!?!

FDA set to ban gay men as sperm donors

New rules aimed at preventing spread of AIDS, officials say

NEW YORK – To the dismay of gay-rights activists, the Food and Drug Administration is about to implement new rules recommending that any man who has engaged in homosexual sex in the previous five years be barred from serving as an anonymous sperm donor.

The FDA has rejected calls to scrap the provision, insisting that gay men collectively pose a higher-than-average risk of carrying the AIDS virus. Critics accuse the FDA of stigmatizing all gay men rather than adopting a screening process that focuses on high-risk sexual behavior by any would-be donor, gay or straight.
