So, to review, this is what seems to be going on vis-a-vis the United States’s relationship with the United Nations:
- President Bush is still rallying to get John Bolton, who once said he thought the UN was worthless, appointed as the U.S. Ambassador to the organization.
- The UN has been trying to get into Gitmo for three years, apparently, to check out allegations of prisoner abuse, but the United States flatly denies them access.
- Iran’s new president has said he wants that country to continue nuclear production, which most of the free world — Europe and the U.S. included — opposes, so President Bush wants European leaders to join him in taking the matter to the United Nations.
As best I can tell, this means we:
(A) Value the United Nations when it slaps the wrists of those we don’t like;
(B) Completely disregard the wishes of the United Nations when our wrists might be the ones slapped; and
(C) Feel our best representative to this body is someone who doesn’t believe the organization is all that important.
Did I miss anything?
