One of my favorite Slate writers, Emily Yoffe (whose book, “What the Dog Did: Tales from a Formerly Reluctant Dog Owner,” has been on my Amazon.com wish list forever), just wrote an article about learning to drive a stick shift that gave me a case of the giggles.
I cannot imagine if I’d had to learn to drive a stick anywhere near the Beltway (the interstate loop around Washington, D.C.). Hell, the incline on Spring Street in Mountain Home was enough to give me nightmares, and it was only a four-way stop.
